Iris Photography Activation at a Live Corporate Event
The Challenge
As a seasoned event professional with over 15 years of experience designing immersive brand activations, I’m always seeking unique experiences that resonate with guests and create lasting memories. One of our trusted Destination Management Company (DMC) partners approached us with a new concept for a corporate event in Houston, Texas — a live Iris Photography activation.
The client wanted guests to walk away with something deeply personal, artistic, and memorable — something that would stand out from typical photo booths or giveaways. Iris photography checked all those boxes, but implementing it in a live event setting brought with it several technical and logistical challenges.
The Solution
We had approximately two months to build the activation from the ground up. After thorough research and several rounds of testing, we engineered a portable Iris Photography station specifically designed for the demands of live events.
📸 Studio Setup for Live Event Environments:
Live events often have unpredictable lighting — which can create harsh reflections on the eye. To control that, we constructed a custom 24” x 24” x 24” enclosure that shielded the subject from ambient light while allowing the photographer to work from the opposite side.
Inside the enclosure, we added a chin and forehead rest to stabilize the subject's face, ensuring a sharp, consistent image every time.
💻 Real-Time Editing Workflow:
Capturing the photo was only half the equation — we also needed to edit the image in real time to isolate the iris, apply a branded black background, and overlay a client or sponsor logo.
To do this, we staffed on-site Photoshop experts who could crop, clean, and finalize each image in about one minute. For remote events, we developed a Dropbox-based workflow that allows images to be edited offsite and returned instantly.

📷 Camera + Lighting Specs:
We selected the Canon R5 mirrorless camera paired with a 100mm Macro lens, mounted on a precision-adjustable Neewer tripod head. To highlight the texture and depth of the iris, we added a dual-arm LED ring flash mounted to the lens — allowing us to shape and position light for maximum contrast and detail.
The Experience
The result? A stunning piece of personalized digital art — an up-close, high-resolution image of each guest’s iris.
Guests were fascinated. Many had never looked at their eyes in such intricate detail before. Lines formed quickly. At our first event, we looked up to see over 20 people waiting in line, excited for their turn to become a work of art.
Each iris revealed a kaleidoscope of colors: electric blues, deep purples, fiery ambers, even rare bi-tones. Every photo was 100% unique — a reflection of the individual and a conversation starter.
